Lagath Media

Your movies and music videos – organized, tagged and played. No ads, no cloud. Made for the Mac.

Version 1.12 · macOS 26 or later · notarized by Apple

Features

A library just for your videos.

Birthdays, holidays, family celebrations and music videos – neatly in one place, separate from your music.

Artists, albums, titles, genres

Every view as a list with selectable columns or as covers – and you choose the cover size. Search, sort, done.

Organizes itself

Every movie lives in the folder of its artist. Add an artist later or change the title, and the file moves along – no shuffling files around in the Finder.

Edit tags

Title, artist, album, genre, year and rating – for one movie or many at once. Existing names are suggested as you type, and ⌥⌘→ moves on to the next movie.

Covers

The cover comes from the movie file. If there is none, the app shows a still – and any frame of the movie can become the cover with a right-click.

A dedicated player window

Full screen, shuffle and repeat. The controls fade away, the keyboard stays ready. With AirPlay, the movie plays on your TV.

Playlists and folders

Collect movies in playlists by dragging and reorder them. Playlist folders keep the sidebar tidy.

Smart playlists

Fill themselves by rules – such as “all music videos”, “artist contains Family” or “added in the last 30 days”. Always up to date.

Several libraries

For example, one for the family and one for music videos – on an external drive, too. Switch between them from the menu.

Almost no mouse needed

Arrow keys in list and cover view, typing a letter jumps to the artist, ⌘A selects everything, Space plays.

Organization

Your files, neatly filed.

A library is an ordinary folder. It holds the movies and the database – easy to follow, even without the app.

Folder “Medien”

One folder per artist

Every movie lives in the folder of its artist, named after its title. Movies without an artist are collected in the folder “_Artist”.

Folder “Datenbank”

The library

Titles, tags, playlists and plays – plus the automatic backups of the last few days.

  • When adding movies, the app copies them into the library. The originals stay where they are.
  • Tags are stored in the library and in the file itself – other apps see them too.
  • Covers live only in the movie files, so the database stays small.
  • Movies of type MP4, M4V and MOV.
  • A whole folder can be added at once, also by dragging it into the window.
How it works

Your own library in four steps.

  1. Create

On first launch, choose a folder for the library – on your Mac or an external drive.

  2. Add

Drag movies or whole folders into the window. The app copies them and reads the existing tags.

  3. Tag

Fill in title, artist and genre. The files reorganize themselves as you go.

  4. Play

Double-click or press Space – in a window of its own, or in full screen.

Safe & Private

Your movies stay on your Mac.

No account, no cloud, no ads. Lagath Media works entirely on your Mac.

No internet

The app doesn’t even have permission to open a connection. It doesn’t look for covers online and never phones home.

Protected by the sandbox

The app runs in the macOS sandbox and only sees the folders you give it. Signed and notarized by Apple.

Automatic backups

Once a day, the app backs up the library’s database. The last five versions are kept.

Nothing gets lost

Deleted movies go to the Trash, never gone for good. And if you like, keep the file and remove only the entry.

Questions

Good to know.

Do I need an internet connection or an account?

No. Lagath Media works entirely on your Mac and can’t connect to the internet at all.

What happens to my original files?

Nothing. When adding movies, the app copies them into the library; the originals stay unchanged where they are.

Which files can I add?

Movies and music videos of type MP4, M4V and MOV. Purchased movies and TV shows are copy-protected; Lagath Media doesn’t import them.

Can the library be on an external drive?

Yes. The library is a folder you choose when you create it. If the drive isn’t connected, the app tells you on launch.

Can I watch the movies on my TV?

Yes, with AirPlay – on an Apple TV, for example. One click on the AirPlay button is all it takes; you keep controlling playback on the Mac. macOS takes care of the streaming, and the app itself stays offline.

Where do the covers come from?

From the movie files themselves. If there is no cover, the app shows a still from the movie. Your own image or a frame from the movie can be written into the file as its cover.

Where can I find help?

In the app itself: the Help menu or ⌘?. Questions and suggestions are welcome at hello@media.lagath.de.
